Formwork Engineering Calculation: Why It’s Needed Before Starting Work

Engineering calculation of formwork is a mandatory stage in preparing for monolithic construction. It allows determining in advance the system parameters required for safe and efficient erection of structures. Without accurate calculations, the risk of panel deformation, concrete leaks, and construction delays increases.

The main purpose of the calculation is to determine the load that the formwork will experience during concrete pouring, as well as temporary loads from reinforcement and workers. This includes determining the thickness of plywood, the spacing of props, beam strength, and quality of connecting elements. Engineers calculate not only vertical loads but also horizontal forces arising from concrete pressure against the panels.

The calculation allows selecting the appropriate system type: large-panel or small-panel formwork. For standard floors and large areas, large-panel formwork is more efficient, accelerating installation and dismantling. For buildings with complex architecture and non-standard shapes, small-panel systems are preferable. Correct selection reduces labor costs and saves materials.

The calculation also covers components: wedge locks, tie bolts, corner elements. Their quantity and placement are determined based on concrete pressure and expected wall load. Lack of fasteners can lead to panel separation, gaps, and loss of concrete shape.

Another important function of engineering calculation is planning formwork rotation. In multi-story projects, the same set of panels is used repeatedly. Calculation helps determine the optimal number of sets for a continuous pouring cycle without downtime, saving costs and speeding up construction.

Without prior calculation, safe conditions for workers cannot be ensured. Correct fixing of elements and load distribution minimize the risk of panel tipping and accidents on site. Engineering control prevents mistakes before installation and reduces the likelihood of costly rework.

Thus, engineering calculation of formwork is not a formality but a necessary step for successful construction. It ensures precise installation, work safety, material savings, and high quality of finished concrete structures. Any project, especially large or multi-story, must start with such calculations to avoid problems during operation.
